Euro Water Polo: Serbia thrills past Hungary

Serbia beats Hungary at their home court in Belgrade (15:14) ensuring a clear semifinals of the European Championship. The water polo classic offered strong physicality, as well as the depiction of true possibilities in the new pool dimensions.

Hungary started off strong with a 3-0 series during the opening two minutes. They were combatted by a more active Serbian defense, firstly held by Milan Glušac. The young keeper is playing his first major senior’s competition and proving to be a true asset of the Dolphins, as pointed out by head coach Uroš Stevanović.

Between the two opposing squads trading their +1 and the numerous equalizers, the packed Arena got their tickets’ worth in every possible aspect. Hungary that was most in favor of the playing field dimension changes, and tonight showed us why. Playing in white, team Hungary didn’t shy away from strong physical contact, as well as quick counter attacks.

However, based on an increasingly stronger transitional plays, as well as goals from Jakšić, Mandić who marked an excellent return to the pool after a two match suspension and Strahinja Rašović, Serbian fans could breathe.

Strahinja Rašović made sure we wouldn’t be seeing penalties: “I was alone in the end because they all did that for me. This wasn’t my goal, but the goal of our entire squad.”, said Rašović postmatch.

Team Serbia now awaits Montenegro in a match that doesn’t determine the hots’ semi-final qualification, but still marks points. This match is also expected to offer viewing delight, given how strongly both squads fight for their own. As well as the fact that coach Dejan Savić previously brought Serbia to two Olympic golds.
