Ronald Koeman is no longer Barcelona’s head coach. The news was confirmed during the first hour of Thursday. As you’d guess, the fans are overjoyed.
If you were aimlessly scrolling through Twitter tonight, you could finally read something good. Barcelona published a statement on firing Ronald Koeman, their now former head coach:
FC Barcelona has relieved Ronald Koeman of his duties as first team coach. The president of the club, Joan Laporta, informed him of the decision after the defeat against Rayo Vallecano. Ronald Koeman will say goodbye to the squad on Thursday at the Ciutat Esportiva. FC Barcelona wishes to thank him for his service to the Club and wishes him all the best in his professional career.
Said the brief media statement also available on the club’s official website.
The debacle in Sunday’s El Clásico was proof of much needed changes. However, the most recent defeat earlier in the evening against Rayo Vallecano was the final straw.
Koeman is known for distancing himself from every tactical and competitive failure, avoiding any personal accountability. The young players such as Pedri were often put on the spot while speaking to the media after some of many bitter defeats.
The search for a new coach is creating a buzz on social media. While Antonio Conte seems to be the current top contender, all the fans want to see Blaugrana’s legend Xavi take the spot. Despite his lack of coaching experience and the possibility of Barcelona repeating the Solskjaer Scenario, everyone supporting Blaugrana is willing to take that chance. The validity of the option will become clearer by morning.
